Notable local buildings include the Kings Head: this 15th century coaching inn has its original wooden stables and exposed wattle and daub walls in its Great Hall.
The inn has a fascinating history as an Assizes and minter of its own tokens as currency after the Civil War. It is also a possible trysting place for Henry V111 and Anne Boleyn, whose father, Thomas, was an important local landowner. The unusual tavern clock is a reminder of a time when personal timepieces were heavily taxed.
Nearby Hartwell House Hotel was occupied by the exiled Louis XV111 of France for five years from 1809. Sadly, his wife died in 1810 – thus becoming the only French queen buried on English soil.
Ten miles southwest, the 14th century Long Crendon Courthouse was the second building to be acquired by the National Trust.
